Well, this chapter certainly took long enough to write. Once you see the size of it, though, you'll understand why. There was just little I could do to divide up this chapter into separate ones. Hope you enjoy the effort! Special thanks goes out to Davner, Bremmi, Makoto-, Strikestwice, Veggitto, Ssedrey, Darksong, Willz, Angie, Zervon, Hounder, K`thardin and any others I forgot for their help in pre-reading this fic. Sailor Moon is the property Naoko Takeuchi, Koudansha, TV Asahi, Toei Douga, Mixx, Pioneer Entertainment and DiC, and ADV. All original characters and concepts are my own and belong to me. Send all feedback to cav@wpi.edu . Sub vs. Dub Guide Earlier translations can be found in chapters one, three, four, five. Hime-chan = "Young Princess" is the closest translation. Haruka, Michiru, and Setsuna refer to Hotaru as their princess, thus usually call her "Hime-chan," where the –chan is used to show her young age. Haruka-papa = Hotaru refers to Haruka with –papa on the end to indicate how she sees her as a "father." Michiru-mama = Similar to the above, except referring to Michiru in the "mother" role. Hyoko-chan = Furuki here sees Hyoko almost as a daughter, though it is something not usually used for someone of Hyoko's age. Another chapter and I'm still not back?! And there was great rejoicing. Shut up! Would you two hush?! This is my big chapter! Aren't you forgetting something? Like anyone cares about your dilemma. They're all here to read about my date with Ueda-sensei! (Eyes go starry.) (Waves hand in front of Makoto's face.) She's gone. At least I'm finally getting a scene. But I'm not! What the hell happened to me?! I foresee little in your future... -_- Anyhow, let's start the chapter! Sailor Moon - Rifts Chapter 6: A Desperate Battle! Neptune and Uranus in Danger?! Haruka swung her arm around a couple of times, making sure that it was back in one place. She was now in her street clothes, leaning up against the pillar she had used a few minutes earlier. Her partner was standing next to her, still a bit worried about her health. "So," she said, breaking the silence. "Who was that?" she addressed the tall green- haired woman who was standing a few feet away from them. Setsuna, not bothering to look up towards her, responded, "He's... someone I know from a long time ago." "Really?" the sandy-blonde asked with suspicion. She looked at her with a more serious look. "Is he the one who took the princess?" Turning her back to the woman, she offered no reply. "I asked you to come here for a reason," she changed the subject. "I'd say you have some explaining to do first," Michiru demanded, joining the conversation. Sighing heavily, the older woman lowered her head. "I can't answer the questions you probably have." "What?" Haruka questioned, stepping away from the pillar. "Setsuna, that man knew you," the aqua-haired woman stated, interrupting the exchange. "He was able to defeat us with barely a sweat. Who is he?" Shaking her head, the woman closed her eyes. "I... can't tell you." Face filled with annoyance, Haruka looked at her coldly. "Can't, or won't?" Spinning around suddenly, Setsuna glared at her. "Don't you think I would if I was allowed to?" The blonde smiled smugly. "I don't know. What's your relation with that guy?" Startled by her words, the green-haired stepped back. "It's none of your concern." "But he's one of them, isn't he?" Haruka shot back, with a violent stare. "If you would give me the chance to explain..." "I haven't heard many people refer to you as 'Setsuna-hime' before," she led her on. "Princess seems a bit of an odd title to be using in a friendly conversation." Frowning, Setsuna explained, "It is a correct one, as you should know. In addition to being a Senshi I was the first princess of Pluto." "And how would he know that?" Michiru looked for an answer. "As I told you, I'm not allowed to..." "Hiding behind that excuse, are we?" Haruka chided her. "Of course not," she answered, showing a hurt expression. "Don't you think I'd explain if I could?" "What was he doing here?" "That's a private matter," the woman answered. Leaping forward, Haruka reached out with her hand and grabbed the collar of the girl's shirt. "Don't play your games with us!" she warned. "We put our lives in your hands before; trusted you implicitly. You're going to tell us what you know and..." As the girl was ranting, Setsuna reached out with a quick motion and pushed her back. Looking at her fiercely, the time Senshi told her, "If you calm down I'll tell you all I am allowed to. But that is all." Tiring of the runaround she was giving them, Haruka started to move forward, when a hand grabbed her shoulder. "Give her a chance," Michiru whispered into her ear. The shorthaired woman looked back at her and relaxed. "Setsuna, please go on," the aqua-haired woman instructed her. Nodding, Setsuna breathed deeply. "I came here... to warn you." Michiru looked at her in a puzzled fashion. "Warn us about what?" Looking at them sadly, she responded in a voice barely above a whisper, "Your lives are in danger." As he exited the dark corridors of the complex and entered the light of the giant room, Takayama found the pony-tailed scientist typing away at the computer console. "My good doctor," he greeted him. "Has there been a problem?" The scientist turned to stare at his king. "There was a similar incident with this monster as there was with the first. I'm working on a way to prevent it from reoccurring, M'lord." Takayama gazed at the crystal in the center of the room before them and smiled. "Someone's misbehaving." Stepping away from the computer console, the scientist walked towards the giant man. "Your majesty... if I may inquire..." "She appears to be unable to intervene either way," Takayama answered his unfinished question. "Otherwise, I am not sure how she would act. Yet, for the time being, she is not a threat." The man smiled. "You must be pleased to hear that." Takayama turned towards him and coldly eyed him. "Make no mistake; anyone who stands in the way of our goals will be swept aside." "I was not implying..." Sending him a knowing stare, the tall man interrupted his friend, "Then perhaps you're disappointed?" Pulling back in mixed shock and anger, the scientist paused. "My feelings are not important, M'lord. Our success is the only thing I desire." Letting out a small laugh, Takayama turned back to the crystal. "Very good. Let me know when you've made the corrections," he said as he turned to leave. Turning to watch him leave, the scientist tried to hide the emotion on his face. "Of course, M'lord." Haruka squinted her eyes at the green-haired woman as she finished uttering her words. "So what else is new?" Setsuna shook her head in frustration. "You don't understand. This... current situation is quite unlike the ones you've dealt with in the past." "How so?" Michiru sought clarification. Sighing, Setsuna looked down at the ground, clenching her fists tightly. "It's... difficult to explain with what little information I can reveal. Sufficed to say, this new enemy is a threat that will place you in grave danger." Crossing her arms, the sandy-blonde leaned back against the pillar. "So why us? What about the others?" "The others are... safe for now," she informed them. "How safe is difficult to say, but at the moment I wouldn't worry." Shaking her head, Haruka's face grew emotionless. "You're not making any sense. Why us and not them?" "That I can't divulge," she responded. Growing irritated again, Haruka gazed coldly at the woman. "What a surprise..." "Setsuna," Michiru quickly changed the subject. "I thought you said that we were more powerful than the other Senshi." Perplexed, Setsuna nodded. "That is correct." "So," Michiru led her on, smiling deviously. "Why was Venus able to defeat a monster that Haruka and I couldn't?" Eyes growing wide, Setsuna looked startled. "I... I don't know what you're talking about." "Oh really?" Haruka mischievously questioned, realizing where her partner was headed. "Before our little rendezvous, we found Sailor Venus fighting one of these new monsters." Setsuna looked fearfully at her. "And... she was able to defeat it when you weren't? "That's the gist of it," Haruka replied. "So... want to tell us why?" Shaking her head nervously, the green-haired woman responded, "I wouldn't know." Michiru smiled confidently, looking as if she had just trapped her prey. "So you lied to us?" Pulling back, Setsuna shook her head. "What I told you before was the truth. That I swear on." Laughing almost madly, Haruka could only seem amused at the whole situation. "You're not a very good liar." Snarling at her, the Time Senshi seemed annoyed at the remark. "I came here because I was worried about you two, chancing punishment for even interfering to this degree. I would've hoped our friendship would be enough so you would trust me." Smirking, the aqua-haired woman spoke, "And we are thankful for your concern, but you must understand you are putting us in a rather awkward position." Sighing, the older woman nodded. "I apologize for that, but please trust me in that you will soon learn everything. Right now, the best thing for you is to leave here at once." Glaring at her, Haruka moved away from the post. "I don't run from my enemies." "Then do it for Hotaru," the green-haired woman retorted. "She's in more danger than either of you." The pair, who had seemed so confident mere moments earlier, suddenly grew concerned. "Hotaru? Is someone after her?" Michiru asked Nodding sadly, the woman responded, "I fear for her safety if she remains here, and I don't think anyone can protect her from what is to come." "To come?" Michiru asked. "Then there's something larger at play here than what we've seen so far?" Darkly gazing at the pair, Setsuna nodded slowly, whispering, "There is much that will happen soon that will put you all in jeopardy." "Hotaru will never agree to it," Haruka pointed out. "She's determined to be a Senshi." "Then make her leave!" the green-haired woman barked at her. "These are not child's games!" Looking back and forth between the other two women, Michiru breathed in deeply. "Thank you for this information, Setsuna. We will consider your advice," Eyes filled with sadness, the Time Senshi sighed. "I must depart now. When I can return, I shall." Nodding to her, the aqua-haired woman gave her comrade a look. "Shall we?" Smiling smugly, Haruka nodded back. "Guess that's my cue." As the two turned to leave, Setsuna fought back tears. *No matter how much I want them to, they won't listen. Damn their stubbornness.* Back to her partner, the sandy-blonde leaned against her car, arms behind her head, looking up blankly. "So..." Already in the car, Michiru shook her head. "I honestly don't know what to think." Stifling a laugh, Haruka grinned wryly. "Well you had to know that she'd even do this to us if called to." "You went too far back there," the woman scolded her. Grimacing, the girl thought on it for a moment. "I'm sorry, but..." "I know," she completed the thought. "But Setsuna's not the type who will budge just because you push her. If she says that's all she can tell us, I doubt we'll get anything further from her." Sighing, Haruka turned around and leaned against the door. "So now what? You seem to be willing to trust her." "Trust her, yes," Michiru said, looking darkly into the dashboard mirror. "If it was just us, I would say we should stay and fight." Haruka nodded. "We can't place Hime-chan in danger." Kicking a rock, Haruka shook her head in agitation. "I hate when she acts like that. And who was that guy?" "Let's worry about more pertinent matters," the woman said, turning to look at her friend. "We need to consult with the others." Nodding, Haruka opened the door and got into the car. "What do we tell them?" Calmly looking forward, the aqua-haired woman didn't move. "Nothing." Smiling, the woman started up the car. "Guess it's just the two of us again." Grinning back, the aqua-haired woman put her hand on the other woman's lap. "Don't you think I'm more than enough for you to handle?" Smiling playfully as she pulled the car out of her parking spot, she offered in response, "Sometimes it's more fun to have others join in." "And then boom!" Minako proclaimed proudly as she finished her story of how she beat the monster. The others were gathered around the table in Rei's bedroom, discussing the latest development with the enemy. "Pretty impressive, huh?" "I'm dying in admiration," Rei responded, rolling her eyes at the girl. "Well at least you're all right." "What about Haruka and Michiru?" Makoto asked. "They seemed a bit dazed, but okay," the blonde answered her. "Oh, they'll be coming by later," she suddenly remembered. "Thanks for the long notice..." Rei sarcastically spoke. "Did you ask when 'later' was?" Minako blinked and put a finger to her chin as she thought. "Um... guess I forgot?" she said, laughing nervously. The other three girls sweatdropped. Ami looked around and started to contemplate events. "This is rather odd, though." "What is?" the raven-haired girl inquired. "Well..." the blue-haired girl started to speak. "The two witches we fought seemed far different than the one that Minako faced." Makoto nodded. "I'd have to agree. In fact, this was the first time that my older attacks have been so effective against them. Up until now they've just been stunning or dazing the monsters." Rei blinked. "You know, you're right. But... why?" Ami shook her head. "I have no idea. I'll have to study the new readings." Pausing, she then looked towards the blonde. "Um, Minako; did you get a new attack like the rest of us?" Face warping, Minako grew tense as her friend asked the question she had feared someone would. "Um... why?" Confused at how defensive the girl was getting, Ami questioned here, "Did something happen?" Shaking her hand wildly and sweating, the blonde nervously chuckled. "It's nothing!" Smiling mischievously, Makoto's eyes locked onto the blonde's blue eyes. "Then why aren't you answering her question?" "No reason!" the blonde quickly shot back. The three girls looked at each other, and then leaned over the table, interrogating her with their gazes. "Minako-chan!" they simultaneously yelled at her, causing the blonde to defensively move backwards Glancing from side to side like a cornered animal, she tried to think of a way out of this. Looking forward again and seeing the intense stares, she sighed and dropped her head in defeat. "Yes..." "And why didn't you mention this?" Ami led her on. "Because..." she started to say, turning her head so she didn't have to make eye contact with them. "It's... it's... IT'S NOT FAIR!!!!!!" Pulling back, the three looked at each other as if the girl had just gone insane. "Um... Minako..." Rei started to say. "Why?! Why do I have to get the embarrassing new attack! Why can't I have a cool crossbow, or a Xena thingy, or a scepter! No! I get the damn whip! Damn it! I'm the Senshi of Love! Not some dominatrix from an S&M video!" Looking back and forth between each other, the three girls tried to conceal their growing hilarity. "A... a..." Rei attempted to say, trying to hold back her outburst. Glaring coldly at the three, Minako folded her arms and sighed. "Oh just go ahead and do it." With her permission, the other three Senshi proceeded to burst into a fit of laughter. "Just remember," a male voice said as he entered the room. "Leather is made from cows; not cats." The same voice started to giggle at the blonde girl's misfortune, while his words caused the other three to laugh even harder. Makoto was rolling on the floor, totally losing it. Ami tried to be polite, but couldn't stop from letting out a giggle. Rei was finding incredible enjoyment from this, banging her fist on the table. Glaring at the white cat, Minako shot him a cold look. "Thanks for understanding, Artemis." "And... and..." Ami started to say between chuckles. "And I thought Rei would be the dominatrix!" Laughing uncontrollably, Rei shouted, "Yeah!" When her brain finally registered what the other girl had said, and how she reacted, she stopped her laughter and turned red. "WHAT?!" "You know..." Makoto said, holding back her amusement for a moment. " I always thought it'd be Ami going in that direction. You know... cute, quiet type. It's always them!" Hearing the tall girl's comment, Ami turned beet red. The girl was saved from further embarrassment as the outside door slid open. "Hey, every..." the tall man started to say, when his eyes came upon an agitated blonde, a furious Shinto, an extremely amused brunette, and a girl who was completely red. "Did I miss something?" Mamoru asked, sweatdropping. "So," Makoto said as she looked at the monitor. "What exactly does it mean?" "It means," the blue-haired girl explained. "That your new power is not lethal like I was afraid it was." "All right!" Makoto shouted in triumph. "However!" the other girl continued. "It takes a great deal of energy to use. Far greater than those attacks any of us, with the exception of Usagi, have used up until now. I would hypothesize that the reason you suffered from heat exhaustion the first time was that it was too much after the hits you took." Blinking, the girl looked for the bottom line. "Meaning?" "Meaning, you can use it, but only if you're not injured heavily, with the knowledge that it'll put you out of the battle at that point." Nodding slowly, Makoto frowned a bit. "Of course there would be a catch." "Well, at least it isn't a total disaster," Mamoru consoled her as he helped Ami examine the results. Luna, who had come in with Mamoru, nodded in agreement. "Oh, I almost forgot," she recalled. Spinning around, she came to a halt a moment later, producing a Senshi communicator, very similar to the others. "This is for you," she said, extending her paw towards the man. "Me?" he asked, perplexed. "Well," she started to explain. "You used to have the ability to tell when Usagi transformed. Since she's gone, you've lost that advantage. This is the only way to make sure you'll be reachable when a monster attacks." Tensing up, the man's eyes became gloomy; incredible pain unveiled itself through his demeanor. After hesitating for a moment, he reluctantly reached out to take the watch. "Thanks," he slowly spoke in barely a whisper. Taken aback somewhat, Luna looked away sadly. "Mamoru..." "Yo!" a voice greeted from the doorway. The four figures turned to see Haruka and Michiru standing there. As the group finished explaining the events of the last week, Haruka and Michiru sat there, staring attentively at the girls. "Quite a week," Michiru said as Rei finished speaking. "You're telling me," Rei said, taking a sip of her tea; throat parched from conversing so long. "And you have no idea who these guys are, or what is going on with these new powers?" Haruka questioned. Ami shook her head. "Not one. They just seem to show up while we're fighting." "Interesting," Michiru said. *Why did they get new powers and we didn't?* she pondered. "You know, it's odd," Luna pointed out. "What is?" Artemis asked. "Well, Haruka and Michiru didn't get any new powers from fighting this monster, yet Minako did," she brought up. Michiru started to think the black cat was a mind reader. "Perhaps it's a clue as to what these powers are?" "Not much of one, I'm afraid," Ami sorrowfully responded. "But it is a start. We didn't get any new powers against these last enemies, but that doesn't tell us a thing since the three of us have already received them in prior battles." "Not true," Mamoru joined in. "I didn't get a new power." "Of course you didn't," Rei teased him. "What did you think; you'd get to throw pansies instead?" The man glared at her in response. "Actually, that's good thinking, Mamoru," Ami brightened. "You are the Senshi of Earth, so by all accounts you should be able to get new powers like we have." "He's never gotten one before," Minako added. "Why should now be any different?" "You have a point, but it's still something to think about," the blue-haired girl concluded. "So have you told Hotaru anything yet?" Luna asked. Haruka quickly shook her head. "Not yet. We're still trying to decide what to do about it." Pondering something for a moment, Ami asked, "Have you seen Setsuna lately?" Tensing, the two Outers looked nervously at her. "Setsuna? Why?" Michiru asked, trying to hide her appearance. "Well," Ami said, noticing their reaction and looking a bit suspicious. "Maybe she would know something about this." Shaking her head, Haruka tried to cover for her friend. "Not recently." "Oh," the blue-haired girl sounded disappointed. "Well, if you can get in touch with her, ask her if she knows anything about this situation." "Sure," Michiru told her. She noticed out of the corner of her eye that a certain tall brunette was staring attentively at her. *Did she notice?* she wondered. *We better get out of here before she can follow through on her suspicions.* Putting her hand on Haruka's leg, she gave her the signal that it was time to leave. "Well, we better get going," Haruka said, realizing what her friend wanted. "So soon?" Makoto said with an evil grin. "Sorry, we're expected back soon," the aqua-haired girl tried to act honest. "Well, now that you two are involved it'll give us a much better chance against the enemy," Minako brightened. Putting on a smile, Michiru nodded in agreement. Makoto sighed as she watched the two leave. "Of course," she said. Turning towards her, the others looked at her oddly. "Of course, what?" Rei asked. "Didn't you see it in their faces?" the tall girl responded. "When Ami asked them about Setsuna..." "Oh!" something clicked in Minako's head. "You mean how nervous they seemed?" "Right!" the brunette exclaimed. "So..." Rei started to surmise. "You think they're hiding something?" Nodding, Makoto crossed her arms. "I can't stand those two sometimes," the raven-haired girl growled. "After all this time, they're still not willing to trust us," Ami spoke sorrowfully. Sighing, Mamoru shook his head. "So much for getting help from them," he bitterly spoke. "Looks like we're still on our own." Artemis looked on worriedly. If Makoto was right, that meant Setsuna had spoken to the Haruka and Michiru as well. *What is she up to?* A horrible thought then entered his head. *Is she trying to use me?* "What do you think, Artemis?" Luna asked him. Pushing those thoughts to the back of his head, he put his paw to his face and tried to think of what he should tell the others. "I don't think those two are our enemies here," he assured them. "However, they would be more then willing to withhold information from us, or use us for information. They're not team players. We have to be cautious." The others nodded together in agreement. "Damn," Haruka swore as she walked down the shrine steps. "You think they noticed?" Michiru asked, knowing where she was going. Shaking her head, the sandy blonde paused. "They might have." Turning around, her partner bowed her head. "If they suspect us, we might not be quite so welcome next time." Nodding, the masculine woman looked frustrated. "That means we won't be able to get information out of them. And with Setsuna acting like this..." "We'll be completely in the dark," she spoke softly. Holding her head up, Michiru looked blankly ahead. "Maybe we should team up with them." "No," Haruka resolutely refused. "Not yet. I'd rather not have to unless we're left with no options." "I thought you'd say that." Pausing for a moment, a dark thought formed in her mind. "What if the reason Setsuna doesn't want us here is because we're no longer useful?" The other woman's face darkened at the thought. She then let out a pitiful laugh. "Kind of amusing, isn't it?" Michiru let out a laugh herself, smiling almost pathetically. "They seem a lot stronger and more determined. I think they're finally growing up" Haruka walked down a few more steps. "I'll find a way to become stronger." "Feeling threatened?" the aqua-haired woman teased her. Flashing a smile, she reached into her pockets and took out her car keys. "You know I don't accept defeat easily." Placing her bag on the floor, Ami collapsed on her bed. To say she was exhausted was an understatement. Between spending most of the day looking at computer readouts, to dealing with Haruka and Michiru's unexpected arrival, and the battle with the witches, she was pretty much ready to call it a day. Too bad it was only four o'clock. Whimpering, she managed to pry herself off of the comfy mattress, took her pocket computer out of her bag, and walked slowly towards her desk. *Might as well get back to work* she tried to urge herself on. It was incredibly annoying to her that the others didn't seem to understand the pressure she was under right now. They needed her to determine who these new enemies were, what these new powers are, and to try to locate Usagi if she had a couple spare minutes. This, of course, was her role in the Senshi. Why should she complain? Sighing, she reached behind the desktop computer and grabbed a loose wire on the back, plugging it into her pocket computer. Pressing the power button on the desktop and turning on the monitor, she sat back and waited for the system to finish loading. *Because, it's never been this urgent.* The feeling in the pit of her stomach that kept arising was there again; fear that she wouldn't be quick enough. That's what it was. If she couldn't figure this mystery out soon enough, Usagi might... *She might already be dead,* her mind reminded her as she nervously chewed on her lip. The others had tried to avoid that subject if they could; the horrible thought that they were already too late. All that was left for them to do was to keep trying, and hope to the heavens they were quick enough. Hope that she was quick enough. As the computer screen finally materialized into the familiar sight of "AmiOS," she took the small computer microphone from the stand and spoke into it, "Hello, Navi." She giggled as she spoke the words, always getting a small laugh from her computer's nickname. She had chosen it based on her favorite anime. "Hello, Ami," the computer responded. Fiddling around with the two computers she had managed to program them so they could be connected. This allowed her to run AmiOS on her desktop, increasing its power quite a bit. It also crashed a lot less than her previous operating system... "Navi, connect me to the Wired," she ordered it. The computer responded by starting up the connection to the Internet. *I hope it's here,* she thought to herself,
